Gentlemen

One of the busier couple of weeks at San Roque hence my 8-minute version of the Newsletter. Please keep reading. Four midweek comps, Team Week by David Steele, ACL Match versus Aloha Away and Home, Quadrangular at Las Brisas, the Florida Scramble and finally the Ranking. With tee times at a premium some of the above have been played with 8-minute tee times to accommodate as many members as possible.

Men’s Competition Tuesday September 24th

A regular field of 29 players took to the fairways of San Roque on a day when the course had a little sand on. It was determined to offer some interesting pin positions and not to give up a good score easily. Only three players beating their handicap it was a close call at the top of the leaderboard. At the other end of the table, it looks like the course is getting some revenge for Jeremy’s recent score of 50 points.

MEN’S Competition Thursday September 26th

With the ACL Match and San Roque Team Week all on the same day it was a great turnout of 32 players for the Thursday Men’s Competition. The two juniors Thomas and Eduardo Ybarra Gallagher were in the winners enclosure finishing first and second (on handicap) with some excellent scores of 40 and 39 points. Wellwinner’ssoys! This left the prizes available for some of the senior members (as described by the RFEG) of the club. Well played Bill Casey for an excellent round of 39 points bringing your handicap down by 3 in the last four months. Also, many thanks to Paul Cambridge for stepping in to do the results.

San Roque Team Week Thursday September 26th

Six teams of four competed over three days at La Reserva, Alcaidesa Links and San Roque. An AmAm, Pairs Better Ball and Individual was the format. The winners came from a long way back to
take the prize with scores of 38 and two 36’s from 15 points behind the leaders after Day 2. Some usual suspects in the winners photo.

ACL Match Thursday 26th September at Aloha Club de Golf

With four matches in the ACL to be played, both home and away, our trip to Aloha was slightly more crucial as they are currently in the top four of the league. They are usually very strong at Home and on the day, they yet again proved as strong as ever. It really was a mixed bag of results for San Roque but as we know that is the game of golf. Eventually Aloha ran out winners 12-6.

QUADRANGULAR Saturday 28th September at Las Brisas Club de Golf

This was the final round of the four-match series between Las Brisas, Aloha, Sotogrande and ourselves. The result would be determined Consequently, Aloha and us. We could finish anywhere day, we beat Aloha. As we all had an Aloha member in our fourballs, the objective was to beat them. It was a great day and the course at Las Brisas was generally very good, but they had a problem with some recycled water which had created some burnt patches on the fairways. They also reduced the Par 5 8 th hole to a Par 3 due to the water problem. Consequently, the round was not federated. Before the final result was announced there were some double checking of the calculations. This ended up with a small change in the final places putting Las Brisas into third and Sotogrande into fourth. My thanks to everybody that participated in this event this year to achieve the final result. It was a tremendous victory to win at Las Brisas and even better to win the overall. I felt so happy on the day, and I keep smiling.

Florida Scramble Sunday September 29th

A different type of scramble which we hope you all enjoyed. A bit of fun with some added pressure with only three playing after the tee shots. It seemed that one team mastered the technique winning by a clear six shots. Well played to the team of Paul Ingebrigtsen, Andy Macauley, Patrick O’Sullivan and Simon Sutcliffe.

Michael Gaarde returned to San Roque after spending two months away to take the spoils with an excellent 37 points.

ACL Match Friday 4th October at Home to Aloha Club de Golf

With a good result needed the team were under some pressure from an excellent 12 players from Aloha. We fought hard but we suffered our first defeat at Home in the ACL this year by 10-8. That has just made our task of winning the ACL a little harder. With three clubs to play at Home and Away, La Quinta, Villa Padierna and El Paraiso all hope is not yet lost. The departure of Sotogrande from the ACL meant we lost the points from the best result we have had this year. If the golfing gods were kind to us, I am certain we can still do it. Six games still means a lot of points on offer.

Monthly Ranking Sunday October 6th Sponsored by Abbeygate Insurance

As usual many thanks to Amanda and Andy Stanford for their continued sponsorship of our Annual Ranking tournament. October is the first month where the start times are based on your position in the Ranking Table. This month we had a very large field of 45 Men and 17 Ladies. This meant that in order to have everyone entered in the competition we reduced the start times from ten-minute intervals to eight. As usual this was a highly competitive event, and this month was no exception. As you know when there are more than 40 players, we split the field into two equal divisions. 42.5 players in each!! In what seemed to be very easy conditions the scoring did not reflect it with only two players playing better than their handicap. Well played to Gary Adams for winning the sponsors prize with an excellent 40 points.

Results

Division 1
1 st – Phil Fisher – 35 pts
2 nd – Josh Hunter – 34pts
3 rd – Lewis Doyle – 34pts on Hcp
4 th – Patrick Holmes – 34pts on Hcp

Divison 2

1 st – Gary Adams – 40 pts
2nd – Simon Sutcliffe – 37 pts
3rd – Tim Vincent – 35 pts
4th – Terry Young – 34 pts on Hcp
