Hola Gents.

Some strange goings on were witnessed at the SRC under brilliant Andalusian sunshine in last weeks Roll Ups both played   off the 63s in preparation for the Club Championships:-

Men’s Captain’s Weekly News 19th August 2025On Tuesday, David MacGregor teed off at the 2nd, got a weird ricochet (could it possibly have been off one of the markers on the ladies tee box?!) and as a consequence, was obliged to play his second shot from the 60s tee (see photo taken by Stuart Agnew, his playing partner, who just couldn’t resist.) G&Ts on DMac!

At the same hole, my playing partner Harry Muller hooked his tee shot which finished perched on the boundary wall.

Question:- was he out of bounds or not?

Jon Hale, who had a mere 12 putts on his front nine (23 points) was understandably delighted with his new putter. Sadly, this was as good as it got for Jon (in Ireland we call it a foal’s gallop) as his back nine wasn’t nearly as good even though he had fewer putts. He admitted later that this anomaly was due to difficulties getting to a few of the greens on the back nine!

……..The joys of golf!

Matt Charlesworth, with whom I played  in Thursday’s Roll Up, used his driver (he carries two, one of them called “the baby”) no fewer than 25 times in his round – every one of them nailed using a cack handed grip. Who can explain it, who can tell you how?!

Results of the weeks Roll Ups are set out below:

No 2s today so the pool goes to the Captain’s Charity.

Over the weekend we had one of the most important competitions of the year (the one that really sorts the men out from the boys!) During the two days of medal play off the 63s in the annual Club Championships, 14 ladies, led by Svetlana and Jules, excelled in looking after the scoreboard, the halfway house and in ball spotting on the fourth hole. Linda was around the course with her camera, capturing the spirit of the event Their enthusiastic involvement in all of this adds hugely to the enjoyment of the occasion for the men. ¡¡Muchas gracias a todas!!

Jon Hale put massive effort into his “ book” with all profits going to the Captain’s Charity. This too added greatly to the fun over the two days.

The course was in wonderful condition – congrats to Borja and his staff. I’d also like to express gratitude and appreciation to Alicia, Fatima, the staff in the kitchen and bar/restaurant and in the Proshop and to Enrique (who did a great job as starter on both days) and his staff as well as to all players who took part. Finally, I’d like to commiserate with those who didn’t get into the prizes and to congratulate the winners.

It has to be said that the Championsip was dominated by one player, Phil Fisher, who withstood the pressures better than anyone else. Phil was narrowly beaten in last years Championship by Max Meggitt to whom he conceded more than 55 years in age difference and so it must be particularly satisfying for him this time. Bien hecho Phil. Yours truly was very lucky to finish one shot clear of Mike Cowburn in the net category.

Some members had expressed concern about the use of chemicals sprayed on the golf course and so I hope that Borja’s email on this topic has provided reassurance.

Some are also “messier” than others as will be seen from the photo below (again taken by Stuart Agnew.)
Can you guess the identity of the culprit!?

Men’s Captain’s Weekly News 19th August 2025

The course will be closed until this Monday for annual maintenance and so Roll Ups will be played on the New Course. There will be little or no “news” therefore and so my next newsletter will issue in a fortnight.

All the best and keep it down the middle.

M. KEANE

PS Quote of the month:-

“My backswing off the first tee put him in mind of an elderly woman of dubious morals trying to struggle out of a dress too tight around the shoulders.”
