LADY CAPTAIN WEEKLY NEWS

LINDA FLETCHER - 5 June 2023

Hello again,
I cannot believe how quickly this week has gone, it seemed like yesterday when I wrote the last newsletter. I am now nearly 2 months into this job (and yes it does feel like a job!) but I must say I am thoroughly enjoying it. My new little grandson is now 15 weeks old and so next week I will be flying over to see him. Evidently, he is quite a ‘chunker’ compared to his sister, so I am doing more arm exercises in readiness for lots of cuddles and rocking.
And so, with that in mind I attended the new yoga session on Wednesday morning. It was so enjoyable but made me realise just how stiff and unfit I have become, even with golf 4 times a week. Because it will start to get very hot by mid-morning, we will start at 9am in future.

LADY CAPTAIN WEEKLY NEWS

As Gonzalo’s clinics are now open to us ladies on Monday afternoons, there is no need to miss either. The times for the clinics in June on a Monday will be 13.30 – 15.00 pm, and Wednesdays at 9.30 – 11.00 am. These will both be early morning in July & August as Gonzalo runs the kids summer camps from 10 am plus it is too hot in the afternoons.

LADY CAPTAIN WEEKLY NEWS

We decided on Tuesday to play non federated as the course was still recovering from the maintenance. There were 11 of us so we split into the Captains versus the Vice Captain’s team with Marie Claire Serroel playing for both sides. It was great fun, adding all the scores together giving a total for each team and with lots of banter between Nicky and myself. Well, The Vice won and so
they all received , no expense spared, a Kit Kat each!

LADY CAPTAIN WEEKLY NEWS

On Thursday, we were back to normal as the greens had recovered enough for us to complete a
federated round without too much stress. There were some very good scores for both the ladies
and gents that played.
1st : Anne Middlehurst – 40 pts birdie on 12
2nd: Nicola Triay – 37 pts – birdies on hole 3 + 16–
she gets so excited with her birdies!
3rd: Linda Fletcher – 35 pts
It was great to see Pat French out on the course as she has been quite poorly since her arrival back in Spain. Also, we met Sally Tierney’s daughter who is out having a rest in Spain with mum spoiling her.

On Friday, we hosted an inter club with La Hacienda, Alcaidesa ladies. They looked very smart in their new navy and white uniform, and we thoroughly enjoyed playing with them; albeit we were somewhat overpowering, taking an 8-1 win on the day. The food was excellent, well done Nicky for organising such a successful day and congratulations team on a great result. We look forward to the return on 23rd.

LADY CAPTAIN WEEKLY NEWS

A Yellow ball competition was keenly fought on Saturday with some great scores but much muttering about the order of play and when the yellow ball should be used etc. However, the weather was great and there were not too many divorces and court cases!
1st: Andy + Amanda Stanford, Chris Hutchin + Maxi Glas – 129 points
2nd: David Tyler, Michael Joy, Klas Brand + Derek Whelan – 118 points
3rd: Iqbal Dharamsi, Malene Bjorlow, Yvonne Chu + Philip Vazques – 114 points

A Reminder of the match play dates for round 1:
Ladies Singles – By June 30th
Ladies Pairs – By Sept 1st
Mixed Foursomes – By June 30th
If you know that you are unable to meet the deadline or indeed complete the competition,
then you must give a bye to your opponent/s that can make more dates than you or at least toss a coin between you. We understand that non-residents find this difficult, but 3 months and 5 months should be enough time to complete the rounds.
This week is International Women’s Golf Week, with many clubs along the coast hosting various events. I sneaked over to La Hacienda, Alcadeisa on Thursday evening and had a great time with a couple of old friends on the driving range and experienced some much-appreciated vino and  tapas. For a while I was leading the straightest shot but unfortunately was pipped at the post from a lady that nobody knew – such is life. We are hosting our own event this coming Wednesday afternoon and currently we have 45 ladies playing, many of which are guests. We are playing a 9-hole Texas Scramble followed by a meal and no doubt more vino. Please sign up if you are available as it will be a great evening with lots of prizes,

a raffle and much more. Thank you, Fatima & Alicia for organising this for us.

On Saturday, David & I were able to present 2800 Euros to the Gibraltar Special Olympic Golf Team. Thank you all so much for contributing to this very worthy cause. They are off to Germany next week to compete in this elite competition, which is held every four years. This is solely for athletes with intellectual disabilities rather than physical disabilities (Paralympics) . The boys have been training for a long time with Mark Emery on Saturday mornings and are really up for the challenge. The money will allow them to enjoy it more with a few luxuries, meals out and to bring back some souvenirs as well as memories and hopefully prizes. It is being televised on ESPN from 15th June.

Course Information from Ben:

Please see below for this week.
•The greens and ante will be top dressed on Tuesday this week, this will help start to smoothen the ball roll out from the renovation works. It is normal as they holes start to grow through that they become more bobbly.
•Tees will be top dressed on Wednesday this week.
•All bentgrass will be sprayed on Thursday this week, this will be subject to the weather as we do have some possible rain during this week. As always what is forecast and what comes could differ so we will wait to make any final decisions until nearer the time.
