LADY CAPTAIN WEEKLY NEWS

24 October 2023

Well at long last the much-needed rain has arrived here in San Roque. As welcome as it is, of course it has caused disruptions in competitions and the mulch has taken a battering!
Heavy 40 km winds also played havoc and fences around us were damaged. The Estrella Damm Andalucia Masters competition at Sotogrande was held with very few spectators overall due to the weather. However, it was good to watch on TV and interesting knowing the course so well.
On Tuesday, just 6 ladies went out with Nicky Triay getting a birdie on hole 3.
1st – Tracey Rogers – 33 points
2nd – Debbie Fisher – 30 points
3rd – Nicky Triay – 29 points
On Wednesday, Nicky & I played in a social competition between some Past captains and current
captains/vices followed by a lunch.
It was very enjoyable and now going to become a bi-annual Event.

We have some family out this week, so such a shame that it is not sunbathing weather for them. On Thursday, we went up to Marbella, to entertain our 5 year-old granddaughter but everything was shut due to yet another public holiday there! What to do? Buy more play doh!!! And jigsaw puzzles…..
On Saturday, the sun decided to make an appearance, so we ventured to Estepona for a lovely walk along the front and surprised that there were so many people on the beach. The kid’s playground is really good which amused our Willow for a while followed by a lovely lunch in Chiringuito Paco – Bill just loves the Sardines – my idea of hell!

On Thursday, the four ladies that played, battled with the wind; They did well to complete the round.
1st – Tatiana Pogiba – 35 points
2nd – Pip Vincent – 33 points
A big thank you to Kevin Bastone for inviting us to the 40th Anniversary dinner of Cancer Relief on Saturday evening. This was an excellent evening, along with David Steele and the team that organised his Charity Speed golf event this summer.
A chance to get the glad rags on!
It’s a great community charity service which helps about 500 people at any one time. This was an opportunity to recognise the staff and volunteers’ care, commitment and dedication over the last 40 years helping countless families whose lives have been affected by cancer. The raffle during dinner was well supported and raised more funds for this good cause which has just been granted significant additional finance by the Gibraltar government. Linda, Bill, Kay, myself, David and
Gianella Steele, Wynne Harcombe, Annette, Gillie and Liz Griffiths attended.

On Sunday, the Raider cup was hard fought for; This is usually 9 holes pairs betterball matchplay foll0wed by 9 holes foursomes matchplay between 2 ‘themed’ teams. Last year it was England V rest of the world.
However, rain only allowed us to complete the first 9 holes. This year, it was Home (Residents in Spain & Gib) V Away (Brexiteers etc). It ended with a very friendly draw – all to battle for next year!
This competition takes quite a lot of organising and I do ask that people do not pull out at the last minute! A little bit of rain is good for you!!
