LADY CAPTAIN WEEKLY NEWS

LINDA FLETCHER - 29 May 2023

Hola Ladies
The week here started with mixed weather, sunshine and showers, but it has been a lot more settled over the weekend. Nicky and I drove to Portugal on Monday, and we had such a nice time, albeit the weather could have been better, but we avoided the showers; we visited the golf courses and potential restaurants for the ladies’ tour in September. I do hope we have made the right decisions as we have tried to accommodate most tastes but at the end of the day, we are going to have a ball! We were very good and did not drink too much alcohol, just the odd cocktail. We also managed to find the Designer outlet at Almancil, but we were not enticed in spending too much.
Thank you, Debbie Richards, for holding the fort on Tuesday and although the course was heavily sanded and the greens extremely bumpy some good results were still achieved by some.

LADY CAPTAIN WEEKLY NEWS

1st: Willairat Buayam 36 pts
2nd: Susie Lillie 31 pts
3rd: Diane Harmer 31 pts
Diane had a birdie on 17 and Agi birdied 16.
It is going to take a couple of weeks before we see much improvement , especially on the greens, so we decided that it was just too bumpy to be federated for the remainder of the week and in fact the medal on Sunday was postponed for 2 weeks until June 11th.
On Thursday we had the perfect 8 for Bingo, Bango, Bongo and I am sure they could hear us in Soto port shrieking when points were scored. The winner was Agi Savitz with 18 points – well
done as it was not easy out there. This photo makes me think that I am shrinking!
On Saturday, 43 players participated in the Captains choice Texas scramble and glad to say the weather held out despite a pessimistic forecast. It was great fun and David and I hope you all enjoyed it. We tried to really mix things up with a low, high and 2 middle handicapped players. The prizes were for the top 5 teams and consisted of wines and golf balls varying in quality depending on placement.

As I said, the monthly medal was cancelled on Sunday but 8 of us played, organised by Malene Bjorlow. A surprise 9th player was David Tyler who challenged us ladies to beating him, so four of us played with him on the front 9 and the other four on the back 9. So, we had 5 balls in each
grouping! Luckily, the course was empty from late morning. Two out of the four had to match or better David’s stableford score on each hole. The first 9 ladies beat him 4 up and the back 9 ladies halved with him. It was great fun and thank you David for being up for it! Yvonne Chu won the
individual best score of the day with 38 points.

It is International Women’s Golf Week next week and so on Wednesday 7th June, we are having a mini ‘guest’ day.
From 4 pm, invite a golfing friend to come and play a 9-hole scramble followed by pizza and wine for just 20 euro for the food (drinks not included) and 5 euro for prizes (no green fee). This is a fun event, and it does not matter the ability of the golfer, we just want to get us ladies together. Please let myself or Alicia know how many ladies you are bringing.
Fatima, in the pro shop, is our ambassador for the Solheim Cup and she has started to organise some events for us ladies in the lead up to September. It is very exciting and watch this space for further information regarding sponsored events for us girlies.

Course Information from Ben:

•All bentgrass will be sprayed on Tuesday and Thursday this week
•All bermuda will be sprayed also between Tuesday and Friday, this
will require light irrigation after the application.
•Morning mowing will start again this week as we get back into
normal mowing patterns, the sticky Levante mornings have made
it very difficult post the closure works due to the sand. Dry cutting
has been taking place in the afternoons to try and keep on top of
the surfaces.
•The recovery across all areas has been very positive so far, especially given the dip in sun light and
temperatures.
•Rotation between mowing and rolling to allow the mechanics to keep the mowing equipment sharp
will be essential to the continued recovery.
•Mulch replacement will continue this week
•The golf course still has many areas of tidying up to be done and this will be ongoing this week also.
