MEN'S CAPTAIN WEEKLY NEWS

DAVID TYLER - 3 July 2023

Thank you to everyone who supported my Captain’s Day on Saturday. Some great scores and good to hear that everyone enjoyed the day. Congratulations to Gary on a great win!! Thank you to Ben and his Team for presenting the Old Course in such good condition.
We raised 380 euros for the Captains’ Charities from the putting competition on Saturday. Thank you to Duncan for rustling up participants for this and for his help getting the scoreboard printed. We look forward to next Board Competitions later this summer.

Please note that with the second period of maintenance on the Old Course starting on Monday 10 July, all federated competitions between Tuesday 18 July to Friday 28 July inclusive will be transferred to the NEW COURSE. Any further significant maintenance work on the New Course has been deferred until we know more from the Town Hall.

This second evening event was again very successful and attended by about 90 people.
A big thank you to Ramón and all the staff for the excellent organisation.

Friday 30 June: Men’s InterClub v La Zagaleta (Away)

The Old Course at Zagaleta is a fabulous layout in great condition and we were virtually the only people on the course. It will be interesting to see how the scoring goes in the Ping Junior Solheim Cup at this venue in September.
This is a great fixture and it was a privilege to watch Carlos Rodiles make 8 birdies with four in a row around the turn. The overall result away from home was 3 – 3 again and this gives final result this year of 6-6. Well done to the Team!
Nearest the Pin on Hole 2: Gary Ward (San Roque)
Nearest the Pin on Hole 13: Keith Bogg (Zagaleta)
Good away wins by Ciaran Lally & Paul Weigall, Jeremy Sibbons & Noel Smith, Francis Payne & Andy Rogers.

Saturday 1 July: Men’s Captain’s Day

An early start because of those marshalling at LIV at Valderrama probably helped with a warm, humid day facing the competitors participating in the first Board Competition of the summer. Thank to Chef Mirko for the excellent food at halfway and a great meal in the evening. The musical entertainment provided by Patricia Roe also seemed to go down well. No holes in one this year (except in the putting competition), but David Lally went even better with a fantastic ALBATROSS on Hole 17, holing out with a 7-iron second shot to follow his EAGLE on Hole 14.

Course information from Ben:

Bent grass will be sprayed on both Tuesday and Wednesday, one application will be wetting agent and then the other fertilizer and health products. Weeds in the mulch will be sprayed throughout the week; an increase in watering with the warmer temperatures has seen these all start to pop up. Action against weeds around bunkers and hard to reach areas will also continue this week. A good proportion of the Teams’ time this week will be spent on the New Course trying to tidy that up before next week, particularly the rough and surrounds of the bunkers, in readiness for when the Old Course closes for further maintenance work.

Thought for the week:

Please remember Pace of Play guidelines this summer. If you are walking that is fine.
However, if the group behind you are all in buggies and are right up behind you, please exercise common sense and call them through at an appropriate point if possible. Let’s have fun, enjoy our golf, be considerate of others and make sure things run smoothly.

Golfing Anecdotes:

“Just felt like I was going to make it,” Talor Gooch said about holing his winning putt to finish at 12 under to clinch victory at LIV Golf Andalucia, hosted by Valderrama. Gooch’s dramatic birdie on Hole 18, one of only five in the event, now moves him 27 points ahead of Koepka in the LIV individual standings.
Gooch wasn’t the only three-time winner on Sunday. The Spanish-speaking Torque GC, captained by Joaquin Niemann, also won its third team title of the season finishing at a total of -16, five ahead of the RangeGoats, with the Crushers GC coming in third.
Some of you, who stayed to the putting competition and enjoyed afternoon drinks on the terrace, may have noticed the owner of PIF, with his considerable personal entourage on the Old Course on Saturday afternoon. This was an interesting addition to Captains’ Day weekend.
Enjoy the sunshine and swing it well this week!
