A very busy week again with good October weather and temperatures in the mid 20s.
This is traditionally the time for the Team Trophy event organised by David Steele. This year a total of 10 Teams entered San Roque Team Week. We started with an Am Am Competition at La Reserva, then Pairs Better Ball on the New Course at San Roque, followed on Thursday by the Individual Stableford on the Old Course here at SRC. After 2 days it was very close with David Steele’s Team leading by one point on 158 points with three teams in joint second on 157 points.
We also had the usual Midweek Stablefords on the Old Course followed at the weekend by the Monthly Medal sponsored by Vinomarket and then the Past Captains’ Men’s Invitational on Sunday with a large field of 112 players. For this popular event, Richard Bell-Young also kindly donated the wine for the Longest Drive and the four Nearest the Pins on the Par 3s.
A big thank you to Richard and also to all the Past Captains attending.
Linda, Nicky and Tracey also organised an additional Nine & Dine on the Friday with 10 teams of four entering.
Congratulations to Bill Fletcher and Andy Rogers for managing to play in this as well as in the League Match at Aloha!
Tracey organised a fun charity putting competition afterwards and it was good to see so many joining in!
Unfortunately, this has not materialised because we needed 4 La Zagaleta Members to play with us and they were two short.
Carlos and I have agreed to try to schedule something, if possible, for February 2024.
Thank you to Duncan Quigley for doing the Start List and officiating whilst I was playing in San Roque Team Week. A slightly smaller field than normal because of Team Week,
but 32 players was still a good turn out.
First: Stu Burrell (35 points)

Fourth: Andrew Wilson (34 points, on handicap)
Twos: None

Vouchers for Free Golf Lessons on the Range with Gonzalo Sanchez have been delivered to Paul Ingebrigtsen and Ray Seamer who both managed to achieve 4 tissues. Paul just got there first but has since been playing very well with frequent visits to the top three.
Well done Paul on all the hard work on the practice range. Jeremy Sibbons is now well placed in this category on 3 tissues.
Pace of Play was poor at the end of the field and Duncan reports that the final group took 5 hours 20 minutes which is clearly not acceptable.
Thank you to Duncan Quigley for doing the Start List and officiating whilst I was playing in the final day of San Roque Team Week. Pace of Play was very poor again in places so we will need to monitor this very closely.

We had excellent conditions for the League match at Aloha. Their new greens are already very good, and the rest of the course was in great shape too. I really enjoyed playing there and it was a useful preview for the Quadrangular at Aloha in November. The food and camaraderie are always fantastic and the soufflés with Grand Marnier definitely lived up to expectations! Thank you to Olav and his team for their great hospitality.
Well done to Duncan Quigley & Norman Savitz and Paul Holliday & Michael Keane for their Away wins! The rest of us didn’t fare quite so well with the result being a home win for Aloha 12 – 6. Despite this we did win the doubleheader 19.5 to 16.5 so well done to the Team!

I also would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Past Captains present for their help and support, thanks to Paul Holliday for donating the golf bag for the main raffle prize and once again to Richard Bell-Young for donating the magnums of wine for the Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive prizes.
Old Course: The top dressing of the greens and ante-greens will continue. Fertilizer will be added on the fairways and greens.
New Course: Continuation of significant work to tidy and improve its condition.
Please pay attention to the Pace of Play! You have been warned. If you are waiting behind slow groups, it doesn’t hurt to fill a few divots. Whilst waiting around, I managed to get through some 20 cannisters of sand on Thursday!!! I know that’s a bit extreme, but it helps everyone if we pay attention to repairing divots and pitch marks. The Old Course is in splendid condition – let’s keep it that way!

I’m not sure that I’m supposed to mention it, but well done to Michael Campbell, guest of Francis Payne on Sunday, for his 8 under par round, probably an unofficial record off the 60 tees for the Old course!
Michael was of course the winner of the 2005 US Open. He had to sink a 6-foot birdie putt on the last hole of qualifying at Walton Heath to secure his place in the event. In the tournament itself, he ended the third round 4 strokes behind Retief Goosen, the event’s defending champion. On the final day, Retief shot an 81. Michael shot 69 and was the only golfer in the last two pairings on the final day to break 80. His main competition came from Tiger Woods who got to within one shot at one point before being undone by bogeys on 16 and 17. Michael won by two shots, carding an even par of 280. Great to see him back at San Roque in good health and injury free, enjoying his golf.
Swing it well this week!
Please sign up for the Raider Cup next Sunday if you are interested. We could do with a few more participants!
