MEN'S CAPTAIN WEEKLY NEWS

6 November 2023

A rather mixed week of weather in southern Spain, but at least the rain is topping up the reservoirs. A good turn out for the Stableford Competition on Tuesday, but in wet and windy conditions on Thursday, only 9 players completed all 18 holes.
It was a lovely day on Wednesday for the Low Handicap Group which was won with 39 points by Michael Keane & Derek Whelan (Pairs Better Ball). The 100m challenge proved much more difficult than anticipated!
The Poppy Appeal Charity Box is on the Bar. All contributions very much welcomed for this very good cause.
The ACL Match against El Paraiso on Friday 3 November was postponed because of the sad death of one of their players last Wednesday evening. The new d ate for the Home Match is Friday 24 November. A great turn out for the November Ranking on Saturday and the weekend was topped off by Marco Penge’s victory in Mallorca!

11 players did not finish and it was difficult to distinguish legitimate retirements from others which were not really in line with RFEG Rules. The Captain was in relaxed mood so waived the 0.2 penalty for the various Nil Returns. This is unlikely to happen again!
No photographs as everyone went home to dry off!

Course Information:

Old Course: The Bermuda will be treated for Spring Dead Spot on Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday the greens, ante-greens and tees will be sprayed with fertilizer and fungicide. The greenside bunkers which have been heavily compacted from the recent rains will receive attention and a thorough raking. The bunkers on Holes 7 and 15 will be prioritised.
New Course: Work continues to get this course in better shape. Broad leaf weeds will be
treated on Monday and the greens will be top dressed.

Thought for the week:

Golfing Anecdotes:

Congratulations to Marco Penge on his great win in Mallorca in the Challenge Tour Grand Final. This convincing win by 6 shots at Club de Golf Alcanada also gave him top place on the Challenge Tour for the year with an automatic spot on the DP World Tour for the 2024 season. Victory in Mallorca was the 25-year-old’s second Challenge Tour win this year following his four shot triumph at the Open de Portugal at Royal Óbidos in September. Speaking about his most recent double achievement after coming off the 18th green on Sunday, Marco said: “It’s unbelievable. Especially considering where I was about eight weeks ago – I think I was about 83rd in the rankings. To be here saying I’ve won twice on the Challenge Tour, and I think I’ve won the overall rankings… it’s hard to imagine. It hasn’t quite sunk in yet.”
