Gentlemen
Finally, the rain arrived to avoid the potential for more water restrictions on the Costa del Sol. However, those living in Valencia were met with some deadly floods with devastating consequences. More about this later in the newsletter.
Men’s ACL Match La Quinta Friday November 1st
With a doubtful start to the morning and heavy clouds still overhead it was decided to play the Home Match at San Roque. It turned out to be the correct decision as by midday the weather had improved significantly, and normal weather conditions had returned. It certainly showed in the golf, the team played with a resounding win 161⁄2 – 11⁄2. By my calculations this should be 17-1 but I’ll leave that for another day. The return match will be November 22nd at La Quinta due to the away being cancelled because of the weather.
Halloween Texas Scramble November 2nd
Following the events in Valencia, always, discussions occurred as to whether the Texas Scramble should take place. It was finally decided to go ahead with some changes to the prizes. Instead of teams winning a prize the entry fees were to be donated to the Valencia Relief Fund. This received a significant boost as the Club, very generously, were going to match the sum raised by entry fees and donations by Members up to a total of €5000. Thank you to The San Roque Club. The current total has reached €3090 matched by the club giving a total of €6180
For the tournament itself, there was a tremendous turnout, I mean of of course with the costumes for the Halloween event. As always, some teams went completely overboard whilst some individuals were difficult to recognise. We hope everybody enjoyed the day and the lunch, that raised a superb amount for a worthwhile cause.

MEN’S Competition Tuesday November 5th
It may have been Guy Fawkes day but not too many fireworks on the course. With 41 players in the competition only one person played better than their handicap. Stuart Agnew with 39 points rocketed ahead of the field by 3 points leaving the rest that played in a trail of smoke.

MEN’S Interclub Trophy Match v K CLUB Wednesday November 5th
The Men from Ireland turned up for the annual trophy match which as usual was a most enjoyable event. San Roque were looking for some revenge for the defeat at the K Club and the result was looking promising with two matches to go. However, the team only managed a half point from those matches which meant that the overall result was halved. K Club retained the Trophy, but I am sure the match next May will have a different outcome. The evening celebrations were as competitive on the course as they were in the bar.
MEN’S Competition Thursday November 7th
After the rain of the previous week the course was looking better than ever but not really yielding any of the 40 points or more that would ordinarily be needed to win the day. Of the 36 players taking part only three managed to break 36 points and only eight better than 30 points. Congratulations to Scott Martin for his first victory in the Midweek men’s competition pipping Terry Young on handicap.

MEN’S ACL Match v El Paraiso Away Friday November 8th
The team from San Roque went to El Paraiso feeling confident after the comprehensive win against La Quinta. The team, led by Joachim Friedl, found themselves the wrong side of Let’s very tight matches. Home advantage for El Paraiso proved too strong on the day and a 14-4 defeat means that a really strong win at San Roque is needed. Let ́s see what the return match brings.
Monthly Ranking Sunday November 10th Sponsored by Abbeygate Insurance
Many thanks to Amanda and Andy Stanford from Abbeygate Insurance for their continued sponsorship of the Monthly Ranking. November is the eighth event of our annual tournament which runs until March 2025. The members were met by a beautiful sunny day with no wind and excellent playing conditions. It seemed like a day when scores would be really good, but the course had different ideas. With a total of 47 players only two managed to better 36 points and one of those was our junior member Thomas Ybarra Gallagher who matched the score of 38 points of John Hunter. Congratulations to both John and Thomas for an excellent round of golf. Strangely enough the next best score was 34 points (yes 34) with three players, Seamus Desmond, Alistair Locke and Iqbal Dharamsi all on the same score.
As usual with 40 or more players the field is split into two divisions by handicap.
