Gentlemen

Firstly, many thanks to Joachim Friedl for taking charge of the two midweek competitions whilst I was away in Madrid on the Captain’s Tour. There is a section on the events with a few photos but the old saying of “what goes on tour stays on tour” still applies.

Men’s Competition Tuesday September 10th

A competitive field of 28 players which by looking at the scores the course had its teeth out! Just the one player beating their handicap and only 11 players over 30. Well played to Stuart Agnew who obviously managed the conditions well with a highly respectable 37 points.

Results

1 st – Stuart Agnew – 37 pts
2 nd – Paul Cambridge – 36 pts
3 rd – Iqbal Dharamsi – 35 pts on Hcp
4 th – Joachim Friedl – 34 pts on Hcp

Nearest the Pin – David Macgregor
Two’s – David Macgregor, Frank Breuer, Andy Rogers & Joachim Friedl
Tissue – Simon Sutcliffe

MEN’S Competition Thursday September 12th

A similar field to Tuesday with 27 players participating in another round of the midweek competition. The course still seems to be the winner with nobody playing better than their handicap. The result was decided on playing handicap with Mike Cowburn just edging out Paul Charles having both scored 36 points. I understand the conditions were a little windy which probably accounts for the fact only 6 players managed 31 points or more.

September 10th – 13th Captains Tour – Madrid

Firstly if you decide to take a trip to Madrid we can all suggest using the IRYO train service. It is similar to the AVE, goes as fast and the service is excellent. Select the Infinita Bistro service and you have a very large seat, plenty of space to move around, a meal included and not expensive.

Enough advertising and on to the tour. We played four courses, Santander Golf Club, R.A.C.E. (similar to the RAC Club), La Dehesa (where our pro Gonzalo grew up) and La Herreria. All four courses had their unique challenges but straight driving was an absolute necessity. Some of us struggled at certain parts of the week to a greater or lesser degree. Our dining experiences in the evening were very good and I must thank our member Luis Fernandez de Caleya for his guidance.

Results

1 st – Frank O’Hara – 86 pts
2 nd – Noel Smith – 77 pts
3 rd – Paul Holliday – 73.5 pts
4 th – Ciaran Lally – 72 pts
