Gentlemen
The bumper edition of the newsletter is more about golf cancelled rather than played. Cabin fever has been spreading rapidly and only a few rounds of golf has been possible over the last few weeks. The good news is that the Captain’s have managed to solve the water shortage on the Costa del Sol. Perhaps we should take a leaf out of the book of the guy across the Atlantic and rename it Costa del Lluvia!!
MEN’S Competition Tuesday March 4th
So this Tuesday we had 20 players daring to venture out with a forecast of some potential rain. Luckily it remained dry and two players were rewarded with a score of better than their handicap. It was definitely a day for Stuarts with the Agnew version scoring a highly respectable 40 points beating the Burrell version by two points on 38. Showing no favouritism well played Stuart. The best of the rest was Davis Steele in third place with 35 points.

MEN’S Perpetual Trophy Match v The Hermitage Friday March 7th
After much deliberation whether we would play it was decided to play a little earlier than normal and hope the rain forecast for around 1pm would not arrive on time. How lucky we were when the day turned out very pleasant and even more pleasant was the result. A comfortable win for San Roque 12 1⁄2 – 51⁄2 but no doubt the return match in Ireland will be more difficult without home advantage. So we keep the trophy till May!!
Mixed Competition Red, White & Blue Saturday March 8th
Cancelled – Yes it rained heavily – again
Quadrangular Competition Sunday March 9th at Aloha GC
Course at Aloha closed – any guess why?
MEN’S Competition Tuesday March 11th
Ten brave souls dared to venture out and managed to escape cabin fever despite what was not a good forecast. They were rewarded with a game of golf – amazing! Harry Tucker took the spoils with 36 points. Paul Ingebrigtsen finishing second with 35 points and Mark Lee scoring 34 points in third place. Harry disappeared immediately after he finished so no photo.

Charity Texas Scramble Wednesday March 12th in aid of Centro Contigo
In agreement with Cornelia Busch, the sponsor, it was decided to postpone this event until August. I am sure we will all support this very worthwhile cause when the sun is shining.
MEN’S Competition Thursday March 13th
Cancelled – Yes it rained heavily again. This is like a normal weather report form Northern Europe. However over the last few weeks they seem to have stolen OUR weather.
DC Memorial Trophy Saturday March 15th
Somebody must have been looking down on us. I wonder if DC was involved and instructed that the members could not have his Memorial Day interrupted. I think probably so. A dry and chilly morning greeted the 72 players who participated. It was nice to see a few members cravatted for the fourth running of this event. It was indeed a pleasure to present one of his old (not by age) friends take the spoils. A great score of 41 points by Seamus Desmond in the last group of the day (after over 5 hours on the course) was a clear winner. Simon Fothergill finished second with 38 points with previous winner Matt Charlesworth finishing third with 37 points on playing handicap and best back nine. The Past Captains presented the prizes. I will let the photos tell the story.

Mixed St Patricks Day Green Ball Competition Sunday March 16th
A fabulous turnout of 81 players trying to get out of the house to play some golf. A few showers tried to spoil the occasion but as ever the members of San Roque carried on. The Irish members that played felt quite at home. I am hoping that by next year everybody will read the notes on how to complete the card!! Many thanks to Frank O’Hara of Diamond Construction for sponsoring the Par 3 Diamond birdie prizes. The clear winners on the day (I had to write that) were the team of Anne Middlehurst, Jules and Jon Hale and myself with a score of 121 points. There were some great looking contestants for the best dressed St Paticks Day outfit which went to Ann & Paul Evans.

Course Info
Work will continue on various areas of the course where the persistent rain has caused certain areas to be re-repaired.
ADMIN POINTS
Please remember the ante-greens are part of the greens meaning trolleys must avoid these areas at all times.
DIVOTS
Following the weekend competitions it appears a lot of them are not being filled with sand. As the majority of players this weekend were members it is important that we keep our course in the best of condition. This has been particularly noticeable on Hole 10 and even more noticeable on Hole 5 as the picture shows.
