Gentlemen
A variety of competitions this week due to a congested fixture list. The normal Tuesday competition clashed with the ACL match versus Las Brisas. Thursday was a pairs Better Ball, to make a change from the Individual Mixed competition. Friday was the return of the Las Brisas ACL match. Saturday was the monthly medal and Sunday the Quadrangular at Real Club de Sotogrande. Now on to how the week played out – good and bad!
MEN’S Competition Tuesday February 18th
Just the 12 players for the Men’s Tuesday competition as the ACL match took another 12 to Las Brisas. Firstly thanks to Paul Cambridge for officiating on what was one of the easier competitions to run. Only 5 of the 12 contenders managed 30 points or more and David Steele was successful, with an excellent 37 points. Ross Easton and Paul Cambridge finished 2nd and 3rd with 34 and 33 points respectively. Dining out on the winnings was difficult.
Results
1 st – David Steele – 37 pts
2 nd – Ross Easton – 34 pts
3 rd – Paul Cambridge – 33 pts
Pairs Better Ball Thursday February 20th
A small change to the calendar was that the Mixed event, which has had a mixed response, was changed to a Mens Pairs Better Ball. Ladies played an individual Stableford. With the congested calendar and February proving to be a quiet month at the club 18 players in 9 teams took to the fairways of San Roque. When we finally managed to obtain all the cards (please remember to hand them in to the Proshop), the pair of John Dickinson and Simon Fothergill were victorious with an excellent 44 points. Jim Jenet & Klas Bras finished second with 41 points and third with 39 points on handicap were the brothers David and Andrew MacGregor.

ACL Matches v Las Brisas 18th & 21st February
As we all know home advantage plays an important part in the outcome of these matches. Our trip to Las Brisas on Tuesday was no exception. The result was 12-6 in favour of LB. This was a little flattering as one member of the Brisas team failed to show and San Roque took 3 points from this match alone. The return at SR on Friday, with home advantage, turned out to be a resounding victory winning 151⁄2 – 21⁄2. Overall winning 211⁄2 – 141⁄2 and moving us into second place with an average of 11 points per game. It’s early days but the scores are in the bag!! Aloha are ahead of us but have only played one home game. Well played team and what a great result against a Las Brisas that had 9 players under 10 handicap. Local knowledge paid dividends at San Roque. Many thanks for all your help in what I think will be my last ACL match as Captain. This is the link to the league:-

Monthly Medal Saturday February 22nd
I often report, as I have been informed, about the weather that we have to suffer on the Costa del Sol. The monthly medal was no exception. We were greeted on Saturday morning with dark clouds that were leaking rather a lot of water. At about 9.45 it was decided that the medal be postponed to the following Saturday as some of the greens were a little under water!
I should also mention by mid afternoon we were back to normal with blue sky and warm sunshine. Some of us have to do it!
Quadrangular Sunday 23rd at Sotogrande
After our amazing performance at San Roque, we were suddenly returned to earth by a tough day at Sotogrande. The good news is that Janine Beck Dols won the Ladies Handicap prize with 37 points. The best for SR in the Men’s section was Klas Brand, finishing 6th, with 34 points. Klas also finished 5th in the scratch section. Overall SR finished tied 3rd but were placed 4th on handicap and
scored zero points.
Overall standings
1 st 4 pts – Tied Sotogrande & Aloha
3 nd 3 pts – San Roque
4 th 1 pt – Las Brisas
